DCU at the ARTEMIS Summer School 2026 and the Development of the ARTEMIS Data Infrastructure

The European project ARTEMIS is developing a new approach to documenting, studying and safeguarding cultural heritage through Reactive Heritage Digital Twins. Unlike static digital representations, these dynamic models bring together different types of data and support risk monitoring, scenario testing and informed decision making for the preservation of cultural heritage assets.

As part of the project, the Digital Curation Unit of the Athena Research Centre participated in the ARTEMIS Summer School 2026, held from 16 to 18 June 2026 at Hof University in Germany. The Summer School brought together cultural heritage professionals and researchers for a three day programme of knowledge exchange, collaboration and hands-on training in technologies supporting the development of Reactive Heritage Digital Twins.

Vicky Dritsou, a member of the Digital Curation Unit, delivered a training session together with Achille Felicetti (VAST-LAB PIN, University of Florence) on the role of the ARTEMIS Ontology in the development of Reactive Heritage Digital Twins. The session demonstrated how the ontology supports the organisation and interconnection of heterogeneous cultural heritage data within the ARTEMIS Data Infrastructure.

A few days earlier, during the ARTEMIS Consortium Meeting, the Unit’s team joined project partners in presenting the progress made on the ARTEMIS Data Infrastructure. Particular emphasis was placed on the evolution of the ontology and its role in enabling semantic interoperability among the different data, tools and services that comprise the ARTEMIS Data Infrastructure.

These two activities marked the completion of 18 months of work on the design and initial development of the ARTEMIS Data Infrastructure, representing a significant milestone for the project. ARTEMIS is now entering its next phase, which focuses on deploying, integrating and evaluating the infrastructure through real-world cultural heritage use cases.
